BLRT Grupp installs exhaust gases purification systems on vessels

Estonian enterprise Tallinn Shipyard, the member of industrial holding BLRT Grupp, installed exhaust gases purification systems on four vessels, belonging to the Finnish shipping company Finnlines. These systems enable ship owners to meet requirements of the International Maritime Organization.

On four ro-ro-type vessels: Finnkraft, Finnhawk, Finnmill and Finnpulp, belonging to the Finnish shipping company Finnlines, exhaust gases purification system was installed. The working principle of such systems named scrubbers is based on scrubbing of exhaust gases with liquid under its maximum contact with the gas particles. Each project required profound preparations, since systems are designed individually according to the singularity of each vessel. Installation of each of these system was completed within less than a month.

Tallinn Shipyard for the first time carried out a whole amount of works within this type of project, starting with detailed design, previous manufacturing of construction systems and elements, and ending with  installation and turn-key assembly. Two ship were modernized at the BLRT Grupp shipyard in Tallinn and another two at the holding’s shipyard in Turku.

The growth of segment of scrubber installation services on ships is connected with the new environment protection requirements of the International Maritime Organization. Started from 2015 in the areas of special exhaust gases monitoring, which include the Baltic Sea region, exhaust gases must be purified on the ships. One of the possibilities of observing new rules is installation of scrubbers.

«According to evaluation of some specialists, the total market volume for the installation of exhaust gases purification systems estimated for several milliards of euros. It is certainly a perspective branch and we try to obtain strong positions: several similar projects await us ahead and we hope to fulfill each of them with the same success», - commented Gabriel Avanesov, marketing director of BLRT Grupp shipyards.

Along with the scrubbers installation BLRT Grupp shipyards pay a special attention to other modernizations works as well, which require special preparation and qualified personnel. Thus at the Western Ship-repair shipyard in Lithuania modernization of three ro-ro type vessels - Trans Carrier, Athela and Express, belonging to the leader of Norwegian waterborne traffic - Sea Cargo company - was completed. After the installation of the side ramp vessels got an opportunity for the independent load without extra costs.
